In fighting with cancers and other diseases, new drugs and technologies have been constantly discovered and manufactured.
But unfortunately, harmful drugs have also been introduced partly due to human's limited medical knowledge and sometimes due to blindness caused by
greed. A famous example is the case of DES. However, many people may not fully aware of the harmful effects of Tamoxifen.
Tamoxifen
Tamoxifen (trade neme: nolvadex), a triphenylethylene nonsteroidal antiestrogen, is a structural analogue of DES. It has been used for over 25 years to treat patients with breast cancer.
Estrogen is known to promote the growth of breast cancer cells. Tamoxifen can slow or stop the the growth of cancer cells that are already present in the body by competing with estrogen for the estrogen receptor.
Tamoxifen is therefore often called an "anti-estrogen".
In the study of Breast Cancer Prevention Trial (BCPT), which was sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI)., more than 13,000 women at higher than average risk of breast cancer
took part in order to see the effects of tamoxifen in preventing breast cancer. The results were promising:
- Almost 50% fewer cases of invasive breast cancer. There were 89 cases in the tamoxifen group vs. 175 cases in the placebo group.
- Almost 50% fewer cases of noninvasive breast cancer, such as ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) or lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS). There were 35 cases in the tamoxifen group vs. 69 cases in the placebo group.
However, Tamoxifen is a carcinogen!
