Lactobacillus acidophilus
Lactobacillus acidophilus
Lactobacillus acidophilus is dominant specie of the lactobacilli family that are the
natural inhabitants of small intestine flora. Lactobacillus acidophilus manufactures
lactase to digest milk sugar.
It also produces a variety of enzymatic activities which have a direct impact on the
immune system’s functions.
Bifidobacteria are the main lactic bacteria specie of the large intestine, also called the colon.
While in infants, they represent the largest portion of the entire intestinal flora, they have
been shown to dramatically decrease as a person ages. It is important to compensate this
natural shortfall with lactic bacteria supplementation in high doses. Bifidobacteria produce
a number of specialized acids to prevent invading bacteria, yeasts and some viruses from
colonizing in the large intestine. They also prevent potential toxicity from nitrites
in food and manufacture B Vitamins.
